Atomicity Refinement and Trace Reduction Theorems

چکیده

Assertional methods tend to be useable for abstract, coarse-grained versions of concurrent algorithms, but quickly become intractable for more realistic , ner-grained implementations. Various trace-reduction methods have been proposed to transfer properties of coarse-grained versions to ner-grained versions. We show that a more direct approach, involving the explicit construction of an (inductive) invariant for the ner-grained version, is theoretically more powerful, and also more appropriate for computer-aided veriication.

A Foundation for Refining Concurrent Objects

We study the notion of class refinement in a concurrent object-oriented setting. Our model is based on a combination of action systems and classes. An action system describes the behavior of a concurrent, distributed, or interactive system in terms of the atomic actions that can take place during the execution of the system. Classes serve as templates for creating objects. To express concurrenc...

Towards linking correctness conditions for concurrent objects and contextual trace refinement

Correctness conditions for concurrent objects describe how atomicity of an abstract sequential object may be decomposed. Many different concurrent objects and proof methods for them have been developed. However, arguments about correctness are conducted with respect to an object in isolation. This is in contrast to real-world practice, where concurrent objects are often implemented as part of a...

Enhancing the usability of rely-guarantee conditions for atomicity refinement

Formal methods are a useful tool for increasing the confidence in the correctness of computer programs with respect to their specifications. Formal methods allow designers to model specifications and these formal models can then be reasoned about in a rigourous way. Formal methods for sequential processes are well-understood, however formal methods for concurrent programs are more difficult, be...

Rollback Atomicity

We introduce a new non-interference criterion for concurrent programs: rollback atomicity. Similarly to other definitions of atomicity, rollback atomicity of a given concurrent execution requires that there be a matching serial execution. Rollback atomicity differs from other definitions of atomicity in two key regards. First, it is formulated as a special case of view refinement. As such, it r...

A Systematic Approach to Atomicity Decomposition in Event-B

Event-B is a state-based formal method that supports a refinement process in which an abstract model is elaborated towards an implementation in a step-wise manner. One weakness of Event-B is that control flow between events is typically modelled implicitly via variables and event guards. While this fits well with Event-B refinement, it can make models involving sequencing of events more difficu...
